Belive it or not i have done mechanics for years and i have sen brand new cars do it for no explained reason and some car places will replace something just to make the money depending on the car it may be fine as well as it may have a small problem that maybe only a computer reader witch a autozone should have would be able to find. Most cars check engine light will shut off after unplugging the battery for at least 30 seconds just like a computer it will reset the sensors and also most cars when sensors are reset it can take 30-60 miles for them to set back into the computer i had a car witch had that light on its whole life and i not only rebuilt the engine but swaped another into it and it goes with someone else still today we removed the bulb in the dash.

Your eng light comes on if your engine is producing above the legal limit of harmeful emmisions. This is determined by the data the computer collects from a number of sensors in the intake, exhaust, and the engine. In most cases your engine is in no imediate danger but on occasion the malfunction could cause other damage. If the light is blinking it means that your engine is missfireing and the catylitic converter is in imenant danger if you keep driving it. On top of all this in new jersey as well as many other states if the light is on or if there is a code stored or all readyness monitors are not set you will fail state inspection. So as soon as possible you should have it fixed

Don't really listen to all these guys, usually its just a sensor, And there really not worth the labor pay to replace if you cant do it

But it probably is worth getting it checked, but unless its a important sensor(All shops will tell you there important) Theres really no need to worry about it, my mother drove a 94 buick with the check engine soon light on and it still drives to this day

If the car is not very new, when you leave it idling for long time the spark plugs can get fouled with oil.

This could cause the engine to misfire which would turn the SES light. Visit your mechanic or the AutoZone to have them scan your engine computer and go from there.

LOL. Usually, that is NOT the case. Find a shop to properly diagnose and repair this issue. Trust you me, you would not want to see the POS that fools who give answers like the above drive for a living.
