So 2 days ago my car's ignition wouldn't turn the slightest bit (We tried everything. Nothing worked). My dad and I had no choice but to buy a new one and replace it. The new ignition came with two keys. Everything is hooked up properly know buy our only problem now is programming the key so that the engine starts. Does anybody know how to do this?

***Note: The old car key fits into the new ignition but won't turn. The new keys turn but the engine won't start.
Car Model: 2000 Mercury Cougar
We still have the old ignition in case we'll need it for any reason.

You need to purchase two new transponder keys for your new switch. You then take the new keys to a hardware store and have them cut using the non transponder keys that came with your new switch as a pattern. That should cost you a couple of bucks per key for the cutting.

The keys then will need to be programmed to your vehicle by the dealer or a locksmith that has the machine that plugs into your OBDII port.

Amazingkeys.com has the original FORD logo OEM keys that will fit your 2000 Mercury Cougar. Keep in mind that although these keys look like other Ford keys, they are different for the Cougar. Here is a picture of the keys:

It's best to replace an ignition lock with an uncoded one.

This is a new lock that comes unassembled with no keys

so you can code it to match your existing key.

Using your original key means there is no programming required. .

This makes the repair less expensive and

you don't end up with a different door and ignition key.

You can buy an uncoded lock from an automotive locksmith.

They can also rekey (code) the ignition lock for you,

or reprogram the transponder keys.

You can start the car until you get the correct lock

by holding the plastic part of the original transponder key

close to the lock while using the new key to turn it.

You'll need to have the keys reprogrammed at the Ford Dealer. It sounds like the SecuriLock antitheft system is kicking in. Is there a THEFT light on it dash?

Unfortunately you need to take to a authorized Ford repair center and have the ECM reset to recognize your new key, Call around perhaps one will have a mobile tech that come to you and reset it, other than that you'll have to have the vehicle towed to them. This is proprietary software and can only be obtained by authorized Ford dealerships and repair centers,

Try to re-install the old immobilzer on the new ignition. Otherwise you have to take it to the dealer to synchronize the new Immobilizer to the computer.
