My check engine oil light came on this week and when it did I noticed since then my pressure level drops to 40 when stopped and goes back up to 60 when driving. I had the oil changed, warning light is off but am still noticing the drop and rise with each start and stop. Is this normal (have I just never noticed the change before) or is it time to bring it to a mechanic? I have only ever noticed the gauge to always be in the 60 range.

oil pressure is created by a pump that turns faster as the engine rpm's increase. When you are idling the rpm's are low, as soon as u accelerate they go up, if u accelerate or go around turns your Gauge stars going lower or your oil light comes on, then stop and check your oil level as soon as possible. NEVER RUN THE ENGINE WITH NO OIL PRESSURE, or the oil light continuously on for more then ten seconds.

40 to 60 is just fine with most engines. I drive a school bus and as long as the pressure is 40 and above, the bus mechanic says that is quite normal. I have a 1986 Oldsmobile Ciera and the oil pressure is about the same, i.e, 40 to 60--even as h high as 80 when the engine is still cold. Whenever a motor idles, you should expect the pressure to be lower than when it is running at high r.p.m.; however, anything less than 40 p.s.i. may indicate you have enough miles on the engine that you may be having a choice pretty soon, e.g., rebuild the engine, or trade it in for another vehicle. Oh well, or so it seems to me.

Just a precautionary P.S. here though. You say the check engine "oil light" came on--or was it the "check engine soon light" that actually came on. I mean, oil light is one thing, but just a check engine light usually means only something is wrong with the emissions system, like maybe you need new spark plugs, a new mass air flow sensor, a new air filter, and stuff like that. Just wanted to be sure of what you were asking with your question.

this is in the normal range range for most engines. sounds as if the sensor could be malfunctioning. i might also suggest that you change to a 20W oil for better lubrication or at least a synthetic oil
