Question:
Honda Pilot battery keeps dying?

Okay so I have a 2006 Honda Pilot. Over the last few couple months my battery would die a random times. Sometimes it will go a week without problem, but sometimes it will need a jump start morning after morning. The battery is less than a year old and my mechanic said the battery is fine and tells me that I may have left a light on that drained the battery (I haven't). He charged it up for me but it still does the same thing. Now here's the weird part, on some days I will turn the key and it gives me the same sound as it does when the battery is dead, but when I turn on an interior or exterior light, they seem bright and full of power compared to other days. When this happens I turn the key to the on position, put the Pilot into Neutral, let it roll about a foot, put it back into park and then somehow it starts up strong. What is the problem here?

You've got some good suggestions so far.

If none of those work, check for a parasitic drain by following the procedure as shown in the video tutorial below:

I have a Honda Pilot 2005 and it had similar issue where it won t start once in a couple or few days. It looked like the battery was out and no power. I changed to brand new battery, but the problem won t go away. It was very frustrating because you don t know when the car won t start. I even bought a jump start battery to temporary fix the issue. Many times it died, I just jump start and the power came back. I took it to the dealership to do a power drain test. They didn t find any problem. I went online and searched. Someone suggests it was the MG clutch relay switch. It was the fuse/relay for the AC. I changed the relay, and sure enough the problem went away. It has been four or five months, and the issue has not come back. It seems to fix it. I d like to share this with people out there.

I have experience similar problem with what seem like a drain of the battery with my MDX. This last time my battery really needed to be changed ( could only hold 10.67 volts). It however seem like a common issue with other owners.

But your shift to neutral seem interesting. If it happens again, see if you can get the voltage reading of the battery. If voltage seem good and you're able to start at neutral again then maybe the neutral safety switch is bad(wow $60).

I always thought it's some kind of drain but ampere is normal. Thought is can be the CD player. Removed all of the CD in changer; not it. Thought the tailgate switch. Turned that back switch off. ??don't know if that is the fix.

If you have a drain, no one have figure it out what it is because it's so intermittent

your radio is in "anti-theft" mode. that happens when the power to ther radio is interrupted as would happen if someone stole the radio. the radio requires a code to reactivate it. if you are the original owner you should have received a white plastic card the size of a credit card with your owner's manual. that will have the 5 digit anti-theft code on it. if you can't find the card, look inside the glove box on the side panels. there should be a white sticker with either a 5 digit code or a 9 or 10 digit code. the 5 digit code will be the radio reactivation code; the 9 or 10 digit code will be the radio serial number. if you have the radio serial number you can call any honda dealer and they can get the code for your radio from that serial number. if you don't have the white stickers in the glove box, then you can get the serial number from the radio. to do that, turn the ignition ON but leave the radio OFF. Then hold down the 1st and last (number 6?) radio station buttons and keep holding them down as you turn on the radio. you should see a code come up that starts with the letter U. release the radio buttons and write the code down. it will then change to a code that starts with the letter L. write that down. call the honda dealer and give them the two codes and they can get the radio code from that. alternatively, if you know the selling dealer you can call them. they should have it on file. you'll need to give them the serial number of the vehicle to get that. hope that helps

Our MDX did the same thing- it was driving me nuts. Then it occurred to me that this only happens after I have locked the doors. I started leaving them unlocked and PRESTO, no more dead batteries. Search Google for 'Parasitic Battery Drain' and begin reading- there are also some YouTube videos (some better than others). In short, 'we' had a 'Parasitic Battery Drain' that would kill a new battery overnight only IF we locked the doors- related to Security System somehow.
