If it is dead the codes may not enlighten you much. Since it is in the driveway and apparently didn't die on the road, I wonder if the passive anti-theft system could be mad. All GM trucks use the notorious Passlock system which can get mad for no obvious reason at all and does not always light the theft/security light. The only good thing about it is you can easily "bypass" it to see if that is what is wrong and teach it the key again if it has forgotten you. See the source, especially the Common Problems section. Note that if the engine does not crank it is not Passlock doing that, and that all ten minute intervals are at least ten minutes exactly.

NO. All 1996 and newer vehicles built for sale in the US use OBDII diagnostics. NO vehicle using OBDII will display codes without a code reader. A basic code reader can be purchased for around $50. Most parts stores will read the codes free. Just don't go buying parts based solely on what they tell you the code means.

You need an OBDII code reader. Take it to a discount auto parts store. They'll sometimes check it for free in hopes of selling you the parts you need. If you don't have an CEL light illuminated, you don't necessarily have a problem.

have money only for replacement parts (if they're cheap enough), none for a code reader. car is dead in driveway, can't drive it to a store, can't pay a tow truck.

No, but basic scan tools are really cheap these days, especially the ones that connect to your phone with Bluetooth, and most autoparts stores can read the code for you for free.

You can get OBDII scanners on ebay for $15.
