my car is supposed to be fuel efficient. i drive a 2010 Hyundai accent, getting 27/36 mpg.
but ive been having to put gas in my car quite frequently. i notice the gas needle going down very quickly. i feel like the gas is supposed to last longer than it how its been lasting. i been spending too much money on gas. and it says when its in overdrive mode, its supposed to conserve gas. my car has always been on overdrive mode, but it still seems to use up too much gas real quickly. if anyone has an idea what the problem is (if there is one) or any suggestions, please let me know! thanks!

I can tell exactly what is happening here. You are uusing really CHEAP oil changes, haven't you!. You HYUNDAI requires SYNTHETIC engine oil, and NOT the wax based junk found in most oil change centers. It makes sludge, and begins to ruin engine sensors over time!. TAke $20 to thelocal quicky lube, and have them clean your THROTTLE BODY nad IDLE AIR CONTROL valve. THe IAC fine tunes the air/fuel ixture as you drive under guidance of your O2 sensors. A dirty IAC will NOT adjust air, your O2 sneosr will carbon up, and your converter will clog over time. A clean T body and IAC vavle guarnatee that your computer is able to adjust your FUEL ixture. Once done, install a fresh set of Denso Iridium or Twin Tip plugs to get more power and economy. Bosch IRIDIUMs are also EXCELLENT. You shoud get MORE ECONOMY that when the car was BRAND NEW!!!

OD, or overdrive is meant to kick in above aprx 50 miles per hour and serves no use below this. durring hotter weather cars perform less efficient. Drag racers have long known they produce much more power in cooler air even though the motor is built the same for all areas, they are tuned different usually for the colder or hotter conditions. Your A/C when turned of reduces mileage aggressively around town as it draws horsepower from the motor causing you to have to push harder to achieve the same speed or acceleration. many cars I have worked on have overlooked needs, parts that need cleaned or replaced beyond simple plugs and air filters. additionally add these to the list of fuel mileage killers

poor working transmissions

tires running low air pressure

wheel alignment and worn steering parts

excess drag on wheels from damaged bearings

smaller tire size than original equipment

brake system dragging

plugged exhaust system

oxygen sensors damaged from blow by or improper engine working.

plug wires beyond working life or oil soaked from engine leaks.

engine pulley bearings dragging.

poor fuel quality and fuel system maintenance

hope this was at least informative

driving in town vs on the highway REALLY changes how fuel efficient it is. Hills also effect this. There are several variables that can effect how fuel efficient a vehicle is.

Well the hyundai accent only has an 11.9 gallon tank size. Pretty small. So if you are getting 27 mpg that means you should be getting around 320 miles to a tank. How many miles to a tank are you getting?

Low tire pressure. Old spark plugs. Old distr. cap & distr rotor. Too big of gap in spark plugs. Using air conditioner. Driving w/windows open. Heavy acceleration/jackrabbit starts.

The gas is diluted with ethanol which lowers the energy content.
