You can get a car battery for cheap from http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=automotive&tag=elan5-20&keywords=car+battery
All you have to do is to look for your car base on make, model and year and see which one fits your budget. The cost of a car battery will depend on brand name and which car it is for. Generally, the cost to change the battery should be free if you are buying the battery from that company. As far as changing the battery yourself, it's not that hard. You just need to know how to take out the old battery and replace it with the new battery going reverse direction. Some places like walmart actually give you money for turning in your old battery. So you can expect to pay anywhere from $70 to over $100 for a good brand name battery with giving you credit for turning in the old battery. The cost of the car battery just really depends on what car you are driving.

replacing a battery is so easy that anyone can do it in about 5 minutes with the right tools. you might want to see how much they are charging you for the battery, and how much is for the labor. If they charge you anything for replacing it, then they are overcharging you imo.

Not all batteries are easy to replace alot depends on the car. Some are in plain sight under the hood. Some in the trunk, some under the back seat. battery price depends alot on the warranty a battery with a 3 year warranty will run around $90. if you pop the hood and cant visibly see the battery that price is kinda high but probably fair. Some batteries are located lower on the front fenderwell and are not easy to get to.

Go to a auto parts store and get a price for the battery. Most stores will put it in for free.
You can get a Gold Duralast from Auto Zone for around $120.

Some part stores will install for free when you buy from them. Batteries are higher now and so is labor.

Go find a different shop. I would expect the average price for a good quality new battery would be in the neighborhood of $75-$100, and many places will change/install your new battery for free.
Try Pep Boys, Auto Zone, Wal*Mart, etc.

that does sound a bit steap. the battery alone should be a great deal of that though. flag on the play though. the battery could still be under warranty at the dealer. a g5 is not that old. i can find a battery for that car ranging from 75.00 to 105.00. this does not include the core charge or the installation but it is a starting point. tax is another thing that is not in that figure. 39-90 is a bit light though, out the door.

They are probably including the labor to do the installation as well as the disposal fee for the old battery. If a mechanic is installing it they are also charging you top $ for the battery.
The battery itself is probably in the $80-$120 range.
I've paid a hell of a lot more than $189 for a battery installation. It all depends on the car.

The replacement cost depends if the battery has a two, three or four year free replacement warranty. I think it varies between $70 to $100.

RE :How much does it cost to change a car battery?
Hi everyone,
I have a Pontiac G5 in the shop and they said it just needs a battery replacement. It sounded like they said for the battery and the installation it was $189, but I was expecting it more to be along the lines of $30-90.
I can't tell if I just heard him wrong or I'm getting schnuckered. Is $189 way too much for a battery replacement?
