im from america so i dont know what a "hiace" is. i however had an 83 toyota celica with this problem. it also had the button to remove the key. im not sure what the problem was but here is how i fixed it. i went to the wrecking yard and found another ignition switch. i wanted to keep the same key for the doors/ignition so i took out the key pins from the broken part...(there are about 5 of them that are specific for each key) and put them into the new key switch (keep them in order) from the wrecking yard. if you are ok with different keys, just a new switch should do.

I have this same problem and this is what works for me. Put the key in the ignition and give the end of the key light taps with a hammer and turn the key the ignition lights should come on and you're away, you may have to do this a couple/few times sometimes. But the real problem is still there so may pay to get a locksmith to fix it eventually if you want to keep the same key or get the barrel replaced.

If none of the above worked you may have a pin in the lock that has dropped out of place, it would allow you to insert the key but not turn the barrel. The barrel needs replacing if this is the case,

If your ignition key has a hole through the end, the pin that slides through this could be damaged but can be replaced.

Insert the key and try moving the steering wheel left to right. If the steering lock is engaged, it won't move. In inserting the key, insert it little bit hard, move the steering wheel before turning the the key for ignition.

Abby gave you the spectacular answer, if it does no longer artwork do no longer stick to enormous rigidity to tutor the steerage wheel lest you incur greater injury, it's going to be very high priced to alter the lock. the only concern i will propose is, merely pour 2/3 drops of very skinny lubricating oil (Singer device Oil) interior the ignition hollow, on a similar time very minutely merely stick to a similar oil directly to the significant. merely attempt it out and in 7/8 cases. with any luck it is going to artwork. If it does no longer artwork nevertheless, merely disconnect the battery adverse terminal, open the conceal merely below the steerage wheel, one drop of oil on the small balls of the lock will do the magic and you will launch the steerage. save this in ideas, no complicated rigidity. If each concern is going ok get a replica key made on the earliest. i think of the final prognosis is wiped out.

I've had problems related to the steerling whell being locked. I had to rock the wheel side-to-side and finally the ignition safety cleared and I could turn the key. Good luck

Wiggle the steering column, if that fails try starting it in a different gear or with your foot on or off the clutch, on or off the brake. Auto makers have utilized all sorts of less than user friendly "safety" features over the years.

the wheel may be locked, try moving the wheel to the left and/or right while trying to turn the key
