remove the bolt that holds the pulley on in the center. screw it back in a couple 3-4 threads enough it doesnt wobble around get a three BOLT harmonic balancer pulley, as the jawed puller will possibly seperate your balancing ring from the mount, screw it down clockwise till its snug then use a wrench to continue to remove it . depending how long it has been on the car as to how hard it will be to remove it, some will go a few turns on the puller bolt then pop right off, ive seen some have to be wrenched all the way off.upon re installing it after youve made your repair , get some emory cloth and clean the end of the crank of any gunk and debris also the inside of the balancer it will go back on by hand for the most part if you do it this way, be sure not to damage or mar the keyway at all as this can go from being a fairly simple job to a real big problem, if you have any other questions your more than welcome to e-mail me . also you might have to trim the lower corners of your timing cover where it contacts the oil pan as it can be a bear to get the timing cover tucked back in there properly. unless you are removing the oil pan which is a whole other prject. be sure to use good silicone when doing this or you will be going through all this again

Remove the big bolt that holds the harmonic balancer on. Attach the puller with the 3 bolts. Run that big threaded bolt (the one that came with the puller) into the center of the puller until it contacts the end of the crank. Using a wrench, continue turning the bolt farther into the puller. As you turn the bolt, the harmonic balancer will start to come off. Crank on the bolt until the balancer is completely off.
Don't use a gear puller. It will ruin the balancer and they're expensive to replace.

1972 Chevelle. Removed all the fan, pulleys, belts, water pump, and all that. Now all I need to do is this: Remove harmonic balancer to remove the timing chain cover and then I can go from there.
But how do I get that balancer out? I have the threaded three bolt puller. But how do I use it? I...

put the three jaws on the outer edge of the balancer and the screw right down the middle of the crankshaft turn the screw and the balancer will begin to come off with each turn of the screw
