1999 Mitsubishi magna, V6, 3.5l.

Please note i have not taken any notice before this, but in the last week i have noticed that when the car gets up to about 80km/h, it seems to rev quite hard for about 10 seconds at 2900rpm then change gear and drop back to 1900rpm. Other gear changes seem smooth, all gear changes seem to rev to 2800 approx, but one around 80 seems to last longer and car seems to be harder to drive.

Could this be a transmission problem?
I have also been told that gear change problems can usually be corrected by a standard car service with electronic tuneup? Is this correct.

The other is that the battery was replaced a few weeks ago and therefore the computer was reset?

Mark - Try driving in regular drive instead of overdrive for awhile and see how it affects the gear changes etc. Your owner's manual explains the drive and overdrive gear positions. You'll lose a little gas mileage on the open highway, but it may help you diagnose the problem if there is one.

While I agree with these answers to some degree, there are Hondas that have tranny problems. The 2006 (and possibly '07) Civic Si has a TSB from Honda concerning the transmissions the 3rd gear going out. Also, all V6 Hondas from 1998-2003 Have a TSB concerning transmission failures. Oddly enough, there were two automatic transmissions used: The 4 speed automatic H4 and the 5 speed automatic H5 trannies. The list of cars with the problem are : 1998-2002 Honda Accord V6 1999-2003 Acura TL 1999-2003 Honda Odyssey 2001 Acura MDX (Honda for some reason won't cover this one eventhough it's the same tranny) 1999-2003 Acura CL My understanding is that not all years of those transmissions are bad. In certain cars, like the Honda Preludes and pre-1999 Odysseys, transmissions aren't a problem. Civics are suppose to have quite a few issues with their trannies to as of 2001 -2003 model years but I don't know anyone who have had or have actually heard of anyone have problems with them.

Well, there could be a problem with the overdrive gear itself if it doesn't want to easily shift to it. I have not heard of a problem with the shift times after the computer has been reset. those only change if you take out your stock computer and replace it with a tuned ecu. I recently had to reset my computer and I noticed no difference in shift points or times. I don't believe you can manually go from drive to overdrive in an automatic transmission (my car can't), I'm assuming your gear selection is P R N D 3 2 1. What you should keep notice for is how long it stays at that high rpm before it shifts, if it takes progressively longer to shift, then you probably have the overdrive gear going out. That could lead to the other gears going out also. Your best option is to take it to your nearest auto mechanic shop and have them check it out before it gets worse.
