My 2001 GMC 2WD 4-CYL Sonoma truck needs some work done; there is a slight bit of oil leaking out of the engine, and according to the local GMC dealer, I need a "front crank seal." Unfortunately I cannot locate a part with that exact name at any online auto parts supply company.

Can someone enlighten me here with a part number/more accurate name for this part? The dealer wants nearly $600 to replace it, but I have a very trustworthy mechanic down the street who'll do the work for me at a MUCH cheaper price; I just need to get the part.

Look up front main seal. At least that's what it used to be called.

You have the front main seal and the rear main seal and the crankshaft is located between them.

I would go directly to the parts store and ask for it there. On-line shopping for auto parts can be difficult because of the different names of things.

Crankshaft seal at the front of the engine. Go to any auto parts store and they should have it in stock. The 4 cylinder S-10 and Sonoma's all have that same problem.

It might also be called the timing cover seal...the crank seal goes in the front timing cover of the engine.. Just as easy to call a local parts store...they should be able to look it up or call the dealer parts dept and get the part number for it to cross-reference..

It is the seal that mounts into the front timing cover & the front of the crankshaft protrudes through it . If your buying it aftermarket you want to ask for a front crankshaft oil seal. If you buy it through Advance auto the part# is 4950 for the National brand .

Timing Seal Kit Autozone part # TCS45762 with sleeve n seal $ 15.99

TCS45793 w/o sleeve n seal $ 13.99

Buy them both and let your mechanic pick whether or not he decides to sleeve the crank or not.

If there is scoring, he may want to use the sleeve which " fills the groove " so to speak

You may also want to ask your mechanic if they prefer to use a GM seal kit exclusively.

Hope this helps
