So I'm sitting at a light and my car stalls. I diagnosed it to a fuel pump. Replaced the fuel pump. And the car still doesn't start. But what if it weren't the fuel pump to begin with. Would a faulty fuel pump make the car stall after the car was already running? I thought the pump only operates when turning the car on and off.

the pump is running any time the engine is. it supplies fuel to the engine. id have to know the vehicle before I went into detail here.

how did you come up with the diagnosis? did yo check the output of the pump? was it making pressure? did y take a line off and see if it was pumping with the key or just guess?? stalling can be a umber of things, if the car is newer and hasn't been tuned , or has low oil if it has a low pressure sensor, in other words if the oil is way low and not picking up the oil pressure sensor will stop the car to keep in from being ruined, is the air cleaner clean and not clogged is the fuel filter not clogged? have you had codes run on it so the computer can tell you what is really wrong? is there a vacuum leak around the engine somewhere, my vette has a oil pressure switch hooked to the fuel pump and on a recent 40 mile trip I developed a small oil leak around the filter by the time I got there the engine cut off and wouldn't start, just luckily I noticed there was no oil pressure as soon as I tightened the filter and added oil it cranked up and ran perfect, so there are MANY things to check.

The pump should turn on when you turn your key in the ignition to the auxiliary mode when your lights and stereo come on but not your engine you should hear a whining noise when it starts real fast. If not you cant test it by just hooking up to a 12 volt battery positive n negative if it turns on its a good pump. Did U replace fuel filter and strainer too?

Run seafoam or any type of gasoline injectors purifier. Fill the gasoline tank to gasoline and run it to about empty and back fill it up finished with gasoline injector purifier extra back. You motor vehicle might want to make sure improve capacity and acceleration because the injectors nozzles are being unclogged and spraying extra frivolously and extra functional. also you may attempt replacing the spark plugs that could want to help in restoring lost capacity if the plugs are previous and wiped out. replacing the gasoline filter out can also help and is low-priced and person-pleasant to do. do not hardship about the gasoline pump they many times very last the life of the vehicle. If the vehicle begins precise up each and every time you tried starting off the vehicle then the gasoline pump is effective. in case you ask the mechanic they could no longer be truthful with you and allow you to recognize it is the pump through the undeniable fact that could want to fee way extra in words or aspects and exertions study to the gasoline filter out. filter out needs to be substitute each and every gasoline years as dirty contaminants in gasoline can improve and clog the filter out. Your grab might want to also be wearing down and that would have something to do with lost capacity and be reluctant to grant capacity and takes time to improve speed.

Don totally understand your ? Do you mean the car stalls or stalled while drivin,Now wont start, if just died on ya,Sounds like a spark prob,Like coil pack,Or pick up coil inside distributor,Which ever you have, Also can be spark plugs,Wires specially if been having any performance problems,Wouldn hurt to change them anyways, Can check see if got spark,Take off a plug wire,Put screwdriver so it touches the metal inside wire,Put it close to metal on engine, Have someone crank it,Look for spark! Tip* Hard to see spark in bright sunlight, Try doin it in evening will def see it,IF got one! Good Luck

I would first replace the fuel filter. Just because you don't hear a whirling doesn't mean the pump is not working. REPLACE THE FILTER!!!!
