Question:
MK1 Ford Mondeo Automatic Gearbox Fault?
2007-09-08 06:29:07 UTC
Hello all, I am having a problem with my Automatic gearbox. I have a 1994 Ford Mondeo 2.0lt Ghia,to which it is not driving due to a fault within the gearbox, my local garage tell me it is the clutch drum that is gone, and maybe some of the gear links etc. I have never taken out a gearbox before, but want to give it a try. I was told that before the gearbox can be removed, I have to take off the subframe, to which it is like a horse shoe shape, all that I would like to know is how tricky is the whole operation, can it be done from home?, any specialist tools required?

I would appreciate any help given

Thanks

Take it to a garage it is a very big job especially for a novice you have to remove the engine bed to gain access to the gearbox and the engine bed has other thing attached to it like the steering rack and it also holds the radiator in place.

An automatic gearbox is the single most difficult item on a modern car to repair. Only attempt it if..

A: you've budgeted for a new one anyway, so what the hey?

B: you're an experienced transmission specialist.

I had to get one overhauled a few years ago due to the clutches being worn ( there were 7 clutches in my BMWs box!), & the guy who did the job explained a bit about autoboxes. I've removed & stripped an engine, but I wouldn't attempt an automatic gearbox.

It's a major job and not one to tackle without garage equipment. Can you get it to an automatic gearbox specialist? They're usually quicker and cheaper than the local garage, being specially set up for the job.

Having taken them of before i would say that is not a job for an amateur , you are taking on a very big job that could overwelm you . if you do go ahead you will need an engine crane , the part you referd to is called a toque connverter , mondeo auto boxes are prone to that problem . other tools you will need are a good socket set with a very long torque bar as the subframe holding bolts are very tight . good luck
