My fiesta was missing last year and i was told the coil pack needed replacing so i had it done. The problem has started again and i am wondering if it it the same problem or just the spark plugs? i only know the basics about cars and would welcome any enlightening info you have. Also is there just one coil pack or several on my car? it is a 1.3 fiesta 51 plate thanks

If the engine is misfiring the cause is one or more of only three things.

1, Ignition/coil pack

2, Spark plugs

3, HT leads.

A process of elimination will tell you which one is the fault.

there's just one coil pack on your fiesta, it's not a difficult diy job, just 4 small bolts with torx heads on, the bottom two are a bit fiddly to get to, but if pull the top section of your air cleaner off it makes the job a bit easier.

your coil pack is on the back of the rocker cover, just to the right of centre, you can identify it easily as there are four thickish wires and each one leads to a spark plug, you just need to pull these off and undo the four small bolts, then theres a plug on the right hand side of the coil pack that needs to be pulled off (it's retained by a spring wire fastening, just push this in towards the plug then ease it off)

the coil pack will cost you around £40.00 from a motor factors, and yes it's more than possible it needs replacing again (especially if it's had an "intermotor" replacement coil pack)

good luck, the job should take you about half an hour as long as you have a torx bit socket (size 25/30 if i remember rightly)

Within the ignition circuit there are four major parts:- The battery that supplies the power to the ignition, the coil which takes the 12volts and boosts it up to several thousand volts, the HT (Spark plug) leads and the spark plugs.

If you have has the coil pack replaced some time ago I would suspect that the problem is somewhere else within the system.

If the car has been recently serviced you can rule out the spark plugs, if however its been some time since they were last replaced try replacing them.

The HT leads can be visually check, you are looking to see that they are not cracked or that the plastic has gone hard and inflexible. If they are, replace them all.

One last thing to check is the coil and more importantly where it is attached to the engine/body. The coil needs to be well earthed, so make sure that the metal between the coil and the engine/body is corrosion free.

Start cheap and work expensive. Take the sparkplugs out one at a time and look at them. The electrode, the bit that goes into the engine, should be a pale brown colour. If its oily or white its faulty. If it looks ok replace it and the ht lead and look at the next plug.Do it one at a time so that you dont get the leads mixed up.Spark plugs are cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Next move on to the ht leads themselves. Are they new?Or are they stiff with age? Are the contacts tightly on the plugs and securly in the distributor? If they are stiff with age, or if you get a shock when you hold one in the middle with the engine running, then they need replacing. Not expensive and easy to do as long as you replace them one at a time andswop identical leads old for new.Not expensive.Easy to do.

Next: The distributor cap itself.Has it got any burn marks on either the inside or outside? On the outside of the cap where the end of the ht lead goes is the cap itself shiny? are there any what look like scratches there? If so then the cap itself needs replacing. Not a hard job but you MUST NOT get the order of the leads mixed up.Swop them one at a time from old to new in the identical positions.

And something i found out from my old punto. It had 2 coil packs. One was duff on just one cylinder.I bought one secondhand for a fiver.Thats cheaper then the price of a new one.Good luck.

coil pack is a square box with the four h t leads plugged into it, it provides the spark to the spark plugs, if you had a new one last year l find it hard to believe that this is your problem and l would check out the plugs and leads first.

Yes, the quick way is to unhook one of the cables from the car battery and leave the car without power for 15 minutes. Then, hook the battery back up and it should have reset it. Or, it will reset itself after a few driving cycles.
