When cold it starts well and goes for a few miles. Then the car starts to jerk as if I was pumping the accelerator. It then cuts out. I put it into park and restart the engine again. When I try to drive it a few yards it cuts out again. It keeps doing this until I just leave it for a few hours to cool down and then it will go fine for another while until the same thing happens again. It is quite an old car (1994) with 116,000 miles on the clock. I brought it to the garage and they checked for a vacuum leak, changed the oil and filters and did an emissions test and none of this made any difference. I hope you can help!

I had an M-Reg Micra(manual, though). As much as I loved it, it sure gave me hell sometimes. Sometimes the engine would just cut out while I was going at 40mph. It just died on me. Very scary. It would also do it at traffic lights, and generally everytime I had to stop. I took it to the garage and they told me the problem lay with the air flow meter, which was replaced for over £400!!! The car just cost me £1200 in the first place. After that it ran okay for a couple of weeks, and then started to die on me again. So after having to call out 'Green Flag' over and over again, I went to another garage and they replaced the battery.... and after that it was fine. I had to sell the car a couple of months later, due to relocation, so I don't know if that did the job in the long run.

engines need 3 things to run...fuel, air, ignition spark.....its a matter of elimination to find which. A bad electrics system could show up quite easily....run the engine during darkness and have a look at the engine compartment. Electrical shorts will show up like a fireworks display. Air side usually takes care of itself...so check fuel delivery system.

it could be that theres a valve stuck so the fuel mixture could be all wrong best to take it to a garage they can find the problem easily, as it should have the fault in its little computer

my car didnt cut out but wouldnt tick over properly and it was a simple valve that was stuck

mass air flow sensor fault, very expensive for new one but go to auto electrician as they can repair them for fraction of cost
