In 1996 the feds mandated that all cars should have a common "D" connector to connect to a reader to determine engine light codes. Take it to NAPA, Auto Zone or Pep Boys for a free evaluation.

BTW, oil is the life blood of an engine and if you can't afford oil changes, you should check for bus routes and park the car.

Any good auto parts store (Checker, Advanced, NAPA auto parts) should have a code reader they'd let you use (they'll walk out and check it).

(Check Engine Light) There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy. A service engine soon, or check engine light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is "out of range". Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem. Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money. The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the "cause". That being said, if per-chance you feel the need to reset the light in the hopes that it was a "glitch" of some kind, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes to clear the check engine light. If the your car has gone to 3 different shops and their code reader detected a fault with the same code and has been replaced with a new one then the problem may lye in the a faulty wire to or from the main computer. Depending on the code reader they were using may not have the capability to perform a function that will reset adaptation or monitor the suspected part. Some late model cars have the capability of flashing the prom chip in the computer that fixes any known bugs in the chip. I suggest taking the car to the GMC dealer because they have the proper test equipment to monitor and performed specific activation test to isolate the problem. Your chances of them finding the culprit is much likely than a shop that doesn't have the proper equipment. If they do pinpoint the problem in a timely fashion they will call u give an accurate estimate to repair it. And that's when u decide if it's not worth fixing. But give them a try. It beats financing a new car and keeping the extra funds for more important things. Good luck!

you know what i live in California and i can probably find 5 shops in my area that would help you out. try autozone for one. ill give you a list of problems that will not have any visual evidence. try tightening the gas cap, that one does it quite often, listen for three clicks.

go to autozone or advance they have testers that they can check it for you for free.

Did they change the filter when they changed the oil? is the oil level correct (when parked on flat ground)? Sorry I can't help with the OBD II, however if you take it to autozone they will do the diagnostic for free which will tell you which part needs attention.

the check engine light comes on for multiple reasons. My check engine light came on for a messed up oxygen meter. It could be many reasons that you cant see from just looking at the engine. I would go get it checked out before it becomes a more serious and/or expensive problem.

RE:

Mazda 3 problems.. Check engine light on, nothing appears wrong?

I drove to work today, it was fine. I got in my car at lunch, and the check engine light was on, and nothing appeared wrong. I immediately get ulcer- bad stressed. I am broker than broke and can't afford any extra expenses. I checked the oil, which was almost completely gone (I'm not kidding about...

I don't have a Mazda, I have a Subaru, but I had a similar problem over the winter last year. When I had it checked, they told me that one of the sensors was malfunctioning and not reading correctly, causing the check engine light to come on even though there was nothing wrong with it. Maybe you have the same problem?

It could be just a reminder that many miles have been covered since your last service interval and you may be due for service. If the light goes out and the car seems to be running ok, you just may need to have the service reminder reset, or maybe it is time to have your car serviced by an authorized service provider. If the car is running properly I would not worry too much, but if you are really concerned and worried it would be best to see your dealer/service provider. As an afterthought however if you are concerned with your automobile it might be advisable to check your oil level more often and have it changed on a more regular basis. Dirty oil/low oil is possibly the most damaging thing that a car can be exposed to.

a Flashing light means BAD! solid is just a emissions related malfunction and yes autozone or checker(soon to be O'riely) will pull the code but ask for the number Pxxxx .. Cxxxx .. Uxxx ...it makes a difference. P are engine/trans . C are chassis . U=bad . I just read ur update (lawers suck!) go to http://www.alldatadiy.com/ pay the 15 bucks and see if you can get blink codes. start there.

According to Mazda the most common reason for the light is that you haven't put your gas cap on tightly enough. If that isn't the case they say it's electrical.

O2 sensors maybe?

probably an emissions iregularity

just ignor it.seriously, don't worry about it.

You can

1)not fillup with gas at Holiday, and

2)Disconnect one battery cable and re-connect it. that will 'reset' or shutoff the light

probably means water in the gas tank from filling up at a crappy gas station
