Question:
Why is my 2004 Ford F150 (5.4L 3V Triton Engine) throwing the following codes: P0022, P0171, and P0355?

I know why it's throwing the P0022 code and it's due to the infamous cam phaser tick, but I'm mainly concerned with the misfire in cylinder 5. The latter two codes happened after replacing spark plugs and ignition coils. Overall I have done the following in the past 30 days: replaced fuel filter, fuel drive pump module (by spare tire), all spark plugs (Motorcraft SP515), all ignition coils (Accel), cam position sensors, VCT solenoids ("upgraded" Ford version), cleaned throttle body and MAF sensor. Now as for troubleshooting regarding cylinder 5 I switched fuel injector, ignition coil pack, AND spark plug (all at different times of course) and the code would NOT follow. I don't hear any vacuum leaks and I used a noid test kit to determine it's not the wiring harness for the fuel injector and ignition coil. IMO it could only be a clogged cat or a bad PCM...my truck has 152K miles. If you need to know anything else, just ask. Thanks!

The last two codes, the bank 1 too lean and the coil E primary circuit issue, both came after you worked on it!

P0355 likely #5 coil connector or wiring near it...This is not P0305 misfire code.

P0171 a vacuum leak from a cracked hose or plastic vacuum elbow or Tee...

P022 could be set by an oil filter( I recommend Motorcraft only), sludge, wrong viscosity oil...anything other than 5W-20 shouldn't be put in these engines.

unplug VCT , then use a DVOM... there should be 12v on one wire at VCT solenoid and the other is not grounded.

If you need to know how to properly diagnose the P0171...

1. Get the compression and wet compression on Cylinder 5 and compare to a neighboring cylinder

2. Buy the $70 borescope style cam from the Harbor Freight and stick it in the Cyl 5 spark plug hole and manually turn over the crank - any scaring ? valves moving ? anything that should not be there ?

See a mechanic with a diagnostic scan tool. Good mechanics troubleshoot first before replacing parts.
