My friend and I rebuilt an IH 454 tractor engine. Major problem was a blown head gasket between 2 and 3.

In rebuilding there is a well-known set of blunders to avoid. If you learn about them before you start then the work will be slightly easier. You should have a proper place in which to work and a complete set of tools. You should also know of one or two good machine shops that can do speciality work such as regrinding the head. If you decide that following written instructions takes too much time, and that you can get away with leaving out some of the steps, then you will never finish the job, and will have engine parts scattered about your yard for half of eternity.

Be careful to have the shop manual for the exact engine if possible. My brother was working on a 1940 Ford V8 truck, and simply ripped out and replaced the ignition wires. He didn't bother writing down which wire went where, but instead followed the firing order in the book. Because Ford makes changes in the middle of the model year, the book's wiring was wrong, and the truck backfired constantly, going down the street, much to the amusement of all.

I have rebuilt 2 engines and done over 40 engine swaps both factory and custom the hardest custom was putting a J32a2 3.2 liter V6 and transmission out of a Acura CL into an 02 Honda Civic, it required lots of custom fabrication: wiring, axles hood, fuel lines, clutch line, dash cluster and about 2 months time working on it in free time

Yes I have, several times and types, and that was facilitated by what I learned in high school auto shop. Cars are engineered to be built by high school graduates on assembly lines. If you can put together a puzzle, you can build a car. The last engine I built, a Mitsubishi G32 was assembled from a bare block on up. That was fun and simple. I was carrying it around the house until I put the flywheel and head on it, then I needed to use a wagon to take it outside and put it on the cherry picker.

Yes, I imported a Japan-built racing motor for my '97 Corolla, as well as a new 6-speed manual transmission and installed it all myself. I completely stripped the beige interior and replaced every component with gray interior from a parts car. It was a very rewarding project.

For sure, swapped many engines and trannys, done head and cam swaps many times. I was pretty good at rebuilding carburetors too, lol.

Yes, all of the above. That's a very broad question where not much useful information can come from it.
