For this job you will need to have a spanner that fits the mountings for the alternator, which is driven by the fan belt. Once the alternator bolts are loosened it can be slid inwards to loosen the fan belt or enable the new one to be fitted. Once loose fit the new belt and then pull alternator out to put tension on the belt, tighten bolts. The belt should not move more than 6mm

My clio's an M reg and recently my fan belt snapped off too...i only realised because it was turning the generator round so the battery wasnt gettin charged and my battery was nearly out! I went to the local garage ha a new fan belt fitted it cost around £20 no more :))

undo the alternator so it slips forwards and backwards (dont remove the bolts)

put your new belt on over the pulleys and pull the alternator the opposite direction use a hammershaft between the engine and alternator to get a good tension and tighten the bolts.

check the tension in the middle of the belt and make sure it can move up or down quarter inch tighten or slacken alternator to desired quarter inch

drive for 500 miles and keep checking and retighten as needed.

Hi Primble, The cam belt IS the timing belt, just another name for it. I'm suprised this hasn't been pointed out to you by anyone else above. As others say normally it is around 60,000 miles, although my clio 172 needs to be done at 72,000 miles. It is quite possible that other belts will need to be changed at the same time.
