Good shift kits will improve a transmission and make it last longer. Bad shift kits will break parts and kill transmission quick.
The B&M shift kit and 75% of the home made dril a couple holes, leave a ball out, etc kits are junk and will kill your transmission.
Kits like the TransGo reprogramming shift kits fixes flaws in the transmission and speeds up shift time with out being harsh on parts
Every transmission I have gets a TransGo shift kit.
I have a th-400 in my camaro, 505 HP engine for 7 years, 600 HP engine for 2.5 years.. Daily driven and weekend raced at 1/4 mile track. TransGo kit in it and so far so good after almost 10 year of HARD use it's still doing fine.
My dad has a th-350 behind a 700 HP twin turbo charged 337, transgo kit in it. 5 years of use and still doing great

it depends on the trans, the engine in front of it and the level of the shift kit. i had an instructor years ago that could show you exactly where a case would crack with a given shift kit installed, and he was usually only off by inches. the shift kits can increase the holding power in the clutch packs, the shift points, or a few other upgrades that can get to be pretty extreme. take a stock thm 400 and leave it in manual low. floor the pedal and hold on. it will shift into second gear and the back tires will make a noise that i have grown to love. and that is a bone stock trans.

Faster shifts are better for the transmission less time between gears.
Since slower shifts mean a longer time for two gears to be engaged and there engagement overlaps generally to smooth the shifts.

To my knowledge kits are neither bad nor good. It's the driver that can be the problem.
