I'm thinking of buying a schumacher or battery maintainer brand battery maintainer and I was wondering if it would charge my dead battery. At least, I'm pretty sure it's dead.

Let me toss a third charger in the mix. An automatic self leveling charger will charge a dead battery (if the cells have not shorted) battery at a low amperage rate. The self leveling automatic part means after the battery is fully charged the battery goes into an automatic float rate which charges only when needed without ever overcharging.

Sears and most auto parts stores has them. They're very inexpensive.

Yes and no.

A battery maintainer is just that. It is intended to maintain a charge only. A battery maintainer does not have enough output to charge a dead battery.

Also, your battery needs to be in fair condition to charge. When a modern automatic microprocessor controlled battery charger is connected to a battery that has less than 50% charge, it will automatically switch to desuflication mode. This is not an option. It will send high frequency signals through the battery in an attempt to dislodge any sulfur crystals that form on the lead plates in a dead battery. It continuously tests the battery during this process. If this test fails, the battery is not charged. If this is what happens you may as well replace the battery as it is no good anyway.

If the battery is otherwise in good condition and only dead, then it can be charged with a battery charger.

A battery charger will but not the maintainer, the maintainer will take much longer to charge, and the charger itself will take long as well, simply because the battery will take time to recover from a exhausted state.
