someone I know needed a clutch and wanted to know if I could change it, I said I'd try to so I did.

I followed all the steps in a Chilton manual and once everything was put back together the last thing I had to do was reinstall the shifter into the top of the transmission.

before I put the shifter back in, I pushed the clutch in and out a few times to see if it felt right and on the 3rd time I pushed it in, I heard something drop. almost like a gear dislodging or something.

then when i went to put the shifter in, it wouldnt go into any gear. the shifter can move to the left but not to the the right. it does not go up or down it will not go into any gear.

what did I do and how do I fix it? has this happened to anyone before

The clutch should not have any effect on your ability to shift the transmission when the engine is off. It sounds like something moved inside the transmission and you put the shifter in wrong. Take the shifter out, have a look and try again. Don't panic, the transmission should not need to come out. Gears and shifter forks cannot dislodge but they can move so you can miss when trying reinsert the end of the lever into its socket inside the transmission. Go online to the ranger station forums and read up, it's a common problem because it's tricky to get it in right.

Box out again.

Usually the release bearing is not correctly fitted and has dropped off the fork it the fork has come out if it's mountings..

If you have an endoscope try that first.

truck is a 1998 Ford ranger 5 speed manual. the slave cylinder and throw out bearing are one unit. I know, I'm an idiot.
