1996 XJS V12 check engine light on, dealer can't find problem?

I have a check engine light on and dealer can't find any problems, no codes showing up, cost me about 10 hours labour for him to tell me this, he didn't clear the engine light so it's still on, anyone know how to reset it, I think it's just OBD I, if it's before 1998, but I'm not sure. Help. Thanx

You took this to a Jaguar dealer and they couldn't help you? I would certainly try to find another Jag dealer to use.I can't tell you how to reset the light,maybe a Hayne's manual is now available for a 96,that might tell you what to look for.

As a dealer wholesaler I have seen this problem very comonly in many years of the V12 XJS. It is usually just a bad sensor that the car is not detecting, causing the check engine light to come on. It is also very common in Mercedes and BMW's. Unfortunetly it is very hard to find which circuit is causing the issue. I wouldn't worry too much if the car is otherwise running well. It is mostly just an annoyance.

All I can say is, if he charged you 10 hours labor, and didn't find the problem, I would never go there again. I know he had the time in, but still, he didn't fix anything, and he is supposed to be the qualified repair personnel.



Call the customer service representative. You should have a number in the owner's manual. You can also get ahold of the regional service manager and talk to him over the phone. I can't see you getting charged that much without any benefit to you. good luck.

If you paid him for ten hours labor take it back and ask for a full refund.He apparently knows nothing about a OBD II system.Could be a loose gas cap that is not sealing.Could be a vacuum hose leak.May be a break light out.Tell him to get the codes or refund your money.

any vehical 96 and newer is obd II and if u went to autozone they may be able to clear the code but dont let them try to tell you whats wrong with it 99% of the time there wrong they're not techs. they sell parts and thats all they try to do when they read and clear codes try a local shop thats willing to let u watch while they work thats a shop that u can trust and will do a good job. i know the shop i work in we let anyone watch even if its not their car and we dont charge a cent until the complant is fixed and we usually dont charge a check out fee if we fix it

OB I, yes, there is a site - DIT Autotab -that can help. Check eng. does not means there is an eng problem. It also indicates maintenance and even loose gas cap. Reset is behind instrument panel, but try disconectting the ground cable from battery first for about 8 to 10 sec.,

take it to auto zone,they will hook up the scan tool and check for codes,tell them that my ex husband sent you and they may even fix it for free,or you can buy a haynes manual for $20 and it will show you everything,don't forget to change your air and fuel filters too,good luck,hope this helps
