the cheap jet-ski batteries im seeing are 80$ and i can find lawnmower batteries for 20$ that are physically the same size.

the batteries are the same voltage and im pretty sure the only thing a battery does in a jet-ski is fire the spark plugs.

ive considered exposure to water as a reason a lawnmower battery would be a bad choice, but ive looked over both and they seem similary water sealed.

is there any reason that would make a lawnmower battery a bad replacement in my jetski?

Actually the VIBRATION/ Shock from the waves will kill the lawnmower battery very quickly .

I tried one and it died in 2 weeks , returned it for "warranty" and tried another that died over a weekend. Bought the true Jetski battery been in for 3 years

Lawn mowers are not very fast and they travel on relatively smooth solid ground. Not a whole lot of jarring vibrations going on there.

Jet Ski's are fast (some going over 70 mph). They constantly travel over or through all sizes and shapes of waves. An environment that is nothing but jarring vibrations.

The purpose made jet ski battery is designed to handle heavy vibrations. The lawn mower battery is not.

The magneto fires the spark plugs. The battery just runs the starter motor and is kept charged by the magneto.

There is NO difference other than size and cranking amps in a lawn mower battery and a motorcycle battery. I run lawn mower batteries in all my skis where I can get them to fit. Polaris and Yamaha are not easily adaptable, but Kawasaki's accept a lawn mower battery very easily.

In my experience, the lawn mower batteries outlast the motorcycle batteries by two years or more!

Im guessing the reason the jet ski batery is more is beacause its a marine batery. Ushualy with batterys size and voltage are the important factors but its probably better to go with the marine batery in this case.

probably not a good idea, just spend the 80 bucks for the correct battery and avoid later complications and problems
