Depends on what you mean by a "blown" engine. If you are referring to an engine that has lost oil pressure and or been ran low on oil, yes the turbo would most likely become damaged along with the internal engine components. Turbochargers are typically lubricated with engine oil. If you have over-revved your engine and broke a connecting rod sending it through the side of the block, again the turbo could have sustained damage from being over-revved. The turbine/impeller assembly can see RPMs in the tens of thousands, but everything has physical limitations before structural integrity becomes compromised.

In short, yes a turbo can become damaged after severe engine damage, but not necessarily.

It depends what happens when the engine "blows", but sure, if the engine blew from detonation you can have chunks of piston flying out the exhaust going directly into the impeller blades that are spinning at 20,000 RPM. Turbos don't make good blenders.

The reawson for most TURBO failures is MOTOR OIL CHOICES. NO wax based engine oils should ever be used in them. The turbo is made to AIRCRAFT specifications and MUST have the best synthetic oils on the market to stay alive and well. NOTHING happens to a TURBO if the engine BLOWS< unless the oil feeda dn return lines are clogged up with SLUDGE and COKE from INFERIOR oil choices. I have owned luckily TWO AUDI turbo cars and niether of them ever developed engine tourlb eor turbo trouble BECAUSE is used only the BEST available SYNTHETIC oils in them. GOOD LUCK!!
