I have a 292 Ford Y-block block that needs to be rebuilt. How much would machine shops charge for there services for rebuilding/machining a motor, like boring etc... Im in So-Cal if that helps with pricing. Just want to know how much something like that goes for so i can start a "list"
thank you

Boring 25 bucks a cylinder

Sonic testing 200-300 bucks

Line boring 100 bucks

Line honing 50 bucks

Block cleaning 100 bucks

cam bearings 75 bucks

freeze plugs 75 bucks

thread chasing 75 bucks

block milling 100-200 bucks

head milling 100-200 bucks

Valve job 200-300 bucks

This is just an average estimate from what I have been quoted on the east coast.

Mike's prices are good but on the high side.

Im in GA. and the machine shop I use charges

Bore and hone an 8 cyl engine block $100

Sonic testing $75

Line bore $75

Line hone $40

Block cleaning (hot tank) $55

Install cam bearings and freeze plugs $45

thread chasing $25

block milling $75-100

head milling for v8 engine $75 to 110 for flat mill, $225 for angle mill

Polish crankshaft journals $40

Turn/machine crank journals $100

Machine/resize rod big ends $45

Plus of course parts, then labor to build the engine. That labor will be in the $400-1,000 range.

I'm an engine builder myself, but do not have a machine shop in house so I out source my machine work and charge customer what I pay for machine work.

For a common engine build, I charge $600 labor, Plus machine work and parts

I would guess that you are looking at something between $3000 and $4500 dollars.

If you just want the vehicle to run. I would look for a good used 302 at a junkyard.

If you want to keep the vehicle original. You will have to rebuild it. You can save yourself a lot of money by doing most of the work yourself. Old engines like that are much simpler than what is in cars today. You don't have to be Mr. Goodwrench to fix it. It is labor intensive though.

That's a 50's engine, you had best start finding where to get parts. A 312 is a better choice and very similar. It would be a bolt-in.
