I have a 1996 Chevrolet K1500. Recently the shift lever on the steering column broke, and I found out that It was due to the face that the transmission shifter lever (the lever that on the side of the transmission that you use to shift the gears with) is frozen (stuck). It wont budge at all, it's basically not coming out of park. The truck was parked on a small incline, though my driveway is a large hill (about a 30 degree incline) and I never had trouble shifting the gears before, while running the trans shifted fine, and switch from Reverse to Drive was never a problem. I've hard the the park pin, when you put it in park, (not sure of the real name) is possibly stuck. If so, is it fixable without dropping the transmission? or what else could it be? Thank You in Advance

IF YOU CAN FIND A TRUCK with the same height bumpers push it from the rear to release some of the pressure off the weight of the car on the trans.place a block behind the wheel and try to shift out.......make sure you have blocked all wheels so it will not roll down hill or over YOU.IF YOU CAN SHIFT TRANS TO THE NEUTRAL POS,AND PULL UP THE EMERGENCY BRAKES

Parking on a hill can sometimes cause this. That is why you need to set the parking brake BEFORE putting the transmission in Park, in order to avoid any problems.

It could be that the parking pawl in the transmission is stuck for some reason. You could try rocking the vehicle back and forth vigorously while attempting to shift it out of Park. Maybe that will work.

A worn park pin (inner of the transmission), if the vehicle is on a incline or a broken park pin (shifted into park mutually as nonetheless rolling) might reason the transmission to no longer unquestionably come out of park. i desire some greater information. Is the vehicle on a incline, even a gentle one? How long replaced into the vehicle parked in the previous the concern replaced into chanced on?

Crap transmission is the first answer. I had the same one on my '94 Z28 and it constantly needed replacement.

This time it's a cheap fix, shift linkage. The tow is going to cost you more than the repair. Oh, and It's not the park pin.
