I would like to know if anyone else who owns a 2001 chevy suburban 4x4 (gas) is now or has ever had problems with the motor haveing a loud knocking in it when the motor is cold or first thing in the morning. This niose is so loud that it sounds just like it where a deisel motor.I have taken to the chevy dealer( more than once)and they keep telling me that it is normal "piston slap".I have my own tramsmission repair shop and have been working on cars for at least 30yrs as a living so I'm not a "car stupid" person.I'm just at the end of my rope on this issue. They (the dealer) is trying to tell me that this normal with this vehichle. For some reason I feel as though I'm haveing smoke blown up places I dare not mention. If you've had any type problems please let me know...Also It keeps going thru parking/running light bulbs and I'm always seeing other Suburbans and Tahoes with one or the other lights burned out..again the dealer says "nope..there has been no problem reported" Strange..huh!!!!

piston slap eh, that's a new one. For the record pistons shouldn't slap. obviously you never always had this problem it jsut started. A nice littel old fasion trik that still works is to get a long screw driver. place yoru ear on the handle and hold the tip to differnt parts of teh engine, first the valve covers, then the head, then teh crank case find out exactly where the noise is being produced. Make sure the noise is in fact coming from the engine and not the engine mounts.

any noise coming from within the crank case will obviously require major work.

I don't own one but my neighbor had a GMC with the exact same problem, he had the Truck in the shop numerous times and even had them rebuild the whole motor with the same outcome. He finally gave up and bought a diesel figuring if he had to listen to that noise it may as well be one he knows is normal.

I would go online and check with the Manufacturer about all your complaints. You may not be alone on your problem, and they may need to recall the vehicles. as for the lights, sounds like a wire may be touching or maybe some relay of somesort may be malfunctioning
