I drive an 86 toyota pickup. Its a 22r engine with manual transmission. Everythings good (basically), except when im done driving around and I shut the engine off it knocks/convulses pretty badly for different amounts of time. It smells like gas and im thinking its a carborator problem. Any ideas?

The term is referred to as "Dieseling" meaning the fuel is ignited with out the aid of the spark plugs. Normally cause on a hot engine, when fuel leaks from the carburetor upon engine shut down. Antidieseling solenoids are usually installed on the carb to rectify the issue.

Timing is off or you are getting bad gas causing the engine to "run on" try some stp gas treatment and raising the octane level of your fuel and check the timing accordingly
