There is no set mileage for brakes. When you hear them squeal - or - if you have your car serviced regularly, they can check the pads and let you know when they are worn too low.

You can't judge by mileage alone. It depends on where and how you drive. If you drive a lot of highway, you won't use your brakes as much and can therefore cover larger distances before requiring replacement brakes. The opposite is true if you do a lot of stop n' go city driving.

Cost depends on if you need just the brake pads or also the rotors as well as if you get Nissan OE replacement parts or cheaper aftermarket parts.

It shouldn't cost more then 1 hours labor plus parts ranging from 20 to 50 dollars depending upon which grade pad you choose, as far as how often that depends upon your driving practices. If you live in a hilly area or drive in city traffic a lot then you use your brakes a lot. If you do mostly highway driving then not as often. I would have them inspected every 30000 miles and you will find the norm for your pad wear. If they are squeaking then you could be cutting into your disk, so get them inspected at some sort of jiffy lube or a garage that has an oil change special they check your car for other short comings in an effort to make more money. Inspection not miles is the way to proceed.

If you have a business change the brake pads, it can run about $80 to $120. If you have a friend who is handy with tools and can do the work for you, then the brake pads will usually cost you around $20 to $30 tops.

You don't really change the brake pads when you hit a certain mileage, you change them when needed because they're worn down. The next time you take your car in for an oil change (every 3 months or 3,000 miles) you should ask the technicians to tell you how your brake pads look.

Signs you need new brake pads...

a) You need to put more pressure on the brake pedal to get the car to stop.

b) Squealing coming from the car when you apply the brakes. (Don't let the squealing go on for too long, or else you could end up needing new rotors which cost about $20 each)
