Question:
oil pressure gauge fluctuating?
?

I have a 1992 Ford f150 with a 302 5.0L v8. My problem is: when the engine is really warmed up (about 10-15 minutes of driving) and i come to a stop at like a stop light or sign.. The oil gauge starts to go from the middle of the word NORMAL and bounces around the *N* on normal back and forth and sometimes it even reads COMPLETELY NO PRESSURE!! like by the L with the red line. and if i put in in neutral or give it a little bit of gas the gauge goes right back to the middle of the word normal.. ALSO if i put the truck in reverse at a stop sign the pressure goes completely to the L with the red line.. but as I said.. if i give it the slightest amount of gas or put it in neutral or park the gauge reads good once more.... Will somebody please tell me what this is. I went out and bought a new oil sending unit today, But I haven't put it on yet. Does anybody ELSE think that the cause of my problem is the oil sending unit?? or is it something like the oil pump Etc.?? Thanks in advance!

I had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it did the EXACT same thing. And so at first I took it in to have the Oil Pressure Sensor checked/replaced. It ended up being the Oil Pump, that might be your problem. I also had a Ford F-150 that did the same thing. And once the Oil Pump was replaced it was fine. When it comes to the Oil Sensor/Oil Sending Unit. To me it was like a Fuel Pump, which I have had issues with in a few cars. The moment I stopped or changed gears the meter would just simply dance for me. And the sensors were in the Fuel Pump so I just waited for the Pumps to go out. And then replace. Good luck! Best of hopes to you!

oil pressure fluctuates after driving for around 30 mins and the oil pressure drops slightly

With the engine warm you will normally see the pressure needle drop toward the lower limit line but it should remain fairly steady. Once you accelerate you will see the indicator climb toward the upper limit line and then hold steady. Your description indicates that you likely have either a bad sending unit or a bad gauge. The fault is nearly always in the sending unit and you'll likely solve the problem once you install a new one.

if your truck is a high miler, then the engine could be worn, and the oil is coming out of the bearings when warm cuz the spaces between them are too large, and the oil is thinner when warm. the oil pump etc are probably fine, but you will have to replace your engine, or just drive it til it dies (it will probably be on the freeway while you are on the way to something important, so this could be dangerous, and i don't recommend it), and get a new truck.
