I just bought a 96 buick park ave. from a family friend. Ive had it for about a month and it ran perfect. Till about 2 weeks ago the check engine light and check oil light came on, which were both fine( the engine and oil). Then while driving one day i realized the gas was really low but b4 i stopped to get gas i had to go to the store. I shut the car off, and when i came back outside the car wouldnt start at all. It mad this low hissing sound and the starter wouldnt go. I thought it was because lack of gas but i end up getting gas in it and it still wouldnt start. My brother thinks the starter is the issue, and the guy who had it b4 me told me he did alot of electrical work to the car but as far as the starter he never had any issues. i dont know what to do, its been about three days and the car wont start at all, as far as i know the battery is fine and there are no other problems. I would like a professional opion or any1 whos had a similar expirence, b4 i spend any money.

The low hissing sound is your fuel pump working. That's a GOOD sign. Usually when you run the tank low you burn out the fuel pump( the gas is the pump's coolant). Two things to check here. First, check the battery( I don't think it's dead because the fuel pump is coming on but look at it anyway) make sure it reads between 12- 14 v on the multimeter. If so, than the battery is fine. Check that the battery connections are tight at the battery. Now go under the car to the starter, check the connections for obvious breakage, melting etc. Tap the soleniod a couple of times, have someone try to start the car( GET OUT FROM UNDER IT!) If it starts, than you have a flat spot and you might as well replace the starter/solenoid anyway. If it doesn't start, click ,nothing, than replace it as it has completely died.

One further thing, once the starter issue has been resolved. Put your multimeter on the battery while the car is running to make sure it's being charged by the alternator. It should read 14.4 volts. if it's less, you need to replace the alternator before you kill your battery.

try smacking the starter with something like a wrench. make sure the wires behind the starter are all connected. a low hissing sound is usually the battery sending juice to the starter for the car to start. To me it sounds like the starter. If it is stick try to push start it. Put it in neutral push it then while it is moving pop the clutch and start it. If it is automatic then give the starter a few raps to make the teeth move. They call it a flat spot. You still need to replace the starter but this will get you to and from for a little bit

if it will turn over, check for at the plugs, if no fire, it might be the module. it happened to me awhile back, my car just stopped, it would turn over but no fire, it was the module. before you buy 1 see if you can borrow a module, before you go and buy a new 1, those cost around $100.00. also see if your getting gas to the injectors, push the schrader valve on the fuel rail, but watch your eyes, and see if gas squirts out, if no gas, change the gas filter.
