I went to sears and got a quote on a new alternator, the quote says Alternator-$139.90, Install Electrical- $59.50. And Gold Belt Tens-$84.99, and Install belt-$34.00. I have been trying to find prices for the alternator belt, and I can't find it. I've searched Advanceauto.com and googled "alternator belt"and I can't find anything . It is for a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 l V8. Is it called an alternator belt or something different? A link or any info is appreciated, thanks.

new car have just one belt not one the different Components, such as alternator. The single belt is called serpentine and can be 40-60 dollars, but the install is usually not that hard. You should really find some one who has done it before and just go the your local auto parts store and change it there with this friend that can help. There is a tool that the auto store have to relieve the tension on the belt, it has a tensioner that needs to be used to loosen the belt.

If it is the original serpentine belt it should be changed. But I certainly wouldn't pay $34 to change the belt. It takes all of about 30 seconds to change a serpentine belt. Tell them if they are going to charge you to change the belt then you will buy one From an auto parts store for about $40 less) and change it yourself. They are already making about $50 mark-up on the belt so they certainly can change it for free. They're going to have the old on off (at least half way off) when the change the alternator so it isn't going to take them any more time to put the new one on as it would to put the old one back on.

It's actually called a serpentine belt. It is one belt that drives all of the engine accessories - alternator, AC, water pump, power steering pump, etc.

Google "1996 Grand Cherokee Serpentine Belt" They run from about $35-$50. Are they replacing the belt tensioner because it is bad or as a precautionary measure? I don't replace anything unless it is bad - but I do my own work on my own cars.

the alternator is driven by a rubber looking belt that goes around the front of the engine. Look at the front of any car engine and you will see the black belt or belts that wrap around pulleys.

$34 seems a little high to me to install a belt. That should be part of the installation of the alternator.

Talk to the shop manager.

yep it sure does have 1. the belt is what turns the alternator but i don,t think you need all that stuff. just get a alternator and a new belt and have someone put it on for you. if you have a auto supermarket where you live check with them. it,s called a alternator belt or accessory drive belt.
