I want to paint my old car a different color. Can I do that and what I need to do afterwards? Contact my car insurance? Change the color in the registration? Thank you.

they don,t care what color it is. they go by the serial number of your car, not the color.

Then go ahead and paint it, there is no law that says you can't change the color. Vehicles are tracked by a seventeen digit number AKA the VIN number and by the state by the license plate. If you feel compelled then go to your local dmv and let them know of the color change so if in the future the police happen to run your plate because they are bored and want something to do and they run your plate they don't get a conflict in information and pull you over under suspicion.

You can change the color of your car, but there is no need to contact your insurance company. You cannot change the color of the car listed on the title. You will severely devalue the car by changing the color though.

Yes you can do that and nothing else needs to be done.
