rear view mirror broke off, help?

My rear view mirror broke off of my windshield and the whole entire thing came off with part of the windshield still glued on the metal piece that sticks to the windshield. The windshield is still fine, but without the rear view mirror, it feels weird. Just wondering should I just try to glue it back on and hope for the best or replace the windshield completely? Not sure if that is worth the trouble. Any suggestions?

Any major auto parts store carries a repair kit (Autobarn, Pep Boys, Napa, etc...)

The kit includes a cleaner (to get old glue residue off) and then the adhesive. I find it most helpful to mark the OUTSIDE of the windshield with a piece of tape or a marker to help you line up where to glue it back on.

Two things to remember:

1) You will need to take the glue the metal piece on first (there is no way that the new glue will hold the mirror and the metal piece while wet). Give it a day or three before trying to hang the mirror back on the metal piece.

2) Most mirrors fall off on REALLY hot days when the car is parked in the sun and the windows are kept closed. Keep the car in the shade or open the windows slightly for the first week after the repair.

I don't think the folks with the first two answers thought about the fact that a chunk of glass came off with the mirror. Mine just did that - so I wonder if I can superglue the glass still attached to the mirror into the divot left in the glass - and if that works, will the glass be at risk of fracturing?

Your local auto parts store will have a kit to re-glue the mirror to the windshield.

Definitely not. You have to buy the entire windshield. Probably be cheaper just buying a new car.
