My car failed its mot in October due to a faulty Lambda sensor.
I priced up a factory one and ended up buying a universal one and let the garage fit it.
Remove the K&N filter, clean the mass air sensor, and try again. The K&N is an oil soaked filter, that leads to oil residue build up on the air mass sensor, that needs to be cleaned off. Also the K&N filter usually is part of a cold air intake system, which will always fail emissions, because you need preheated air, not cold air. The fuel refrigerates the intake manifold as it is injected, and you need to warm it up. But one should also check the fuel rail pressure, the sensors resistance, and the condition of the converter by loking through the porcelain lattice, from the front flange. It would also help if you told us what the failing readings were, whether it was hydrocarbons or CO?

Lambda is the air fuel ratio. It basically mean how much fuel to how much air is required to achieve the perfect burn.14.7 air to 1 fuel is the value. The Lambda sensor measures this value to insure the engine has the correct fuel to air ratio. And when your EML come on it means this is incorrect. Where two sensors are fitted One is pre cat. and the other post cat between them they measure, instruct and monitor the fueling. If one is wrong, broken or reading incorrectly your engine will not be fueled right. If it's a turbo charged engine this can cause serious damage. Parts are norn.. around £60 to £100

make sure you cars has not got two lambda enssors as som have one b4 the cat and one after
if fitting one
do not get an after market one /universal one
as some may have 4 or five wires and get the wires same color in pairs
if connect them wrong to the cars wiring connection lug will damge the lambda sensor making it useless or possible somehting on your car
try the dealer or TPS

When you say the fault coeds have been "solved and cleared" what do you mean exactly? Did any actual mechanical work get done on the car or any parts replaced, or did someone just clear the codes and turn off the light? The K&N filter probably isn't helping so ditch it.

It will probably fail, so just replace the sensor. Simple, 2 minute, bolt on job that costs about £50-60 from http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/

whats lambda? is it to do with exhaust emissions? i had a light that came on, something to d owith emissions, or something and would have cost a packet to fix, so i left it as MOT wasnt due and the light went out and it passed when had MOT, maybe it is similar and you have been through a deep puddle which did something? thats how mine got affected, just say to them that you dont want to pay loads of money for something that`ll prob fix itself / be nothing (obviously if a warning light comes on they`ll tell you it needs fixing and charge loads, girl at garage i saw said its £130 for the exhaust parts and more for the labour, she told me people do drive round with warning light on as its a warning and not urgent, but if goes red then should go straight to garage, so i left it and saved £200 )

Yes it will fail the emission tests , without the lambada the ecu will not know how much Oxygen is in the exhaust system, and will not control the fuel input.
