Car loses power when accelerating?

I have a 1999 Ford Festiva Trio (auto), I have had the car for 10 years. One week ago I was at roundabout and had to slow down, when I went to accelerate there was no power and it felt like it would stall, this went on for several seconds, I put my foot down harder on the accelerator and the car backfired twice, it then came good. My mechanic told me to put premium unleaded in it which I always do.

One week later (today) it has happened again. Although my car is booked into see my mechanic this Wed, I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what they think it might be? NO DUMB ANSWERS PLEASE. It's last fuel filter was in June 2006.

Cheers

LOL! I had the same problem with my car and it was the catalytic converter. It tested ok until it burned up. When you try to accelerate does the back seat sound like someone is slurping on a straw and the glass is empty? My car did and they thought it was the fuel filter. It wasn't, it was the catalytic converter. Three mechanics looked at the problem and until the converter actually went out, they couldn't find the problem.

LOL I had so much fun with my mechanics. They would laugh at my descriptions, but would agree the noises sounded like my descriptions.

Good luck, hun.

sounds like the converter is partly blocked, yet examine the gas rigidity first, if its a quad 4 the bus bar to the spark plugs is undesirable, very consumer-friendly concern with quad 4 you need to bypass to the broking to get a sturdy grade area ,after industry areas for this concern basically don,t paintings nicely.

first of all a Festiva should not need premium fuel. Hifger octane fuel is for high performance engines, which yours is not. I would expect a clogged fuel filter (which you mentioned) of a fuel pump which is about to fail.

fuel filter is definatly the first place to start. also moisture in the fuel can d this. add drygas
