Earlier i asked if i could measure the main AND rod bearings using a micrometer by just dropping the oil pan? The answers i got were yay for rod bearings and nay for main bearings.

Now i would like to know if it is even possible to measure the main bearings using a plastigauge while engine still in the car! You know, like without removing the crankshaft and by just dropping the oil pan.

If no, then how exactly can i check the main bearings' condition by only droppings the oil pan. Reason i want to do so is because im getting low oil pressure and engine tapping/ticking

yes you can but make sure there is no wind or dust or grit about or it could wreck the engine, why not just buy new shells and fit them, seeing discoloration on the old shells is a sure sign of wear

you may degree the connecting rods, however the mains is yet another tale. i'm not sure in case you will come across a measuring gadget that would attain to a a million/2 uncovered considerable bearing magazine... even with the undeniable fact that it would be super in case you would be able to desire to discover one. a typical micrometer can't attain in there a ways adequate to get an precise interpreting on an identical time as the crank remains in place.
