I have a 2003 impala and got my oil changed 2200 miles ago (about 2 months ago) and the change engine oil light just came on. About 1500 of the miles are from long highway trips. Does anybody know why the light could have turned on so quickly and should i get it changed again even though i'm only supposed to get it changed every 4000 miles?

The light comes on because you don't bother to read the manual on how to set the interval and reset it.

Altering your oil each 3000 miles is a rip-off. Mostly vehicle manufacturers recommends altering oil each 5000 miles. Read your service guide. Why would oil go unhealthy after 3 months? It may well sit on the shelf in a store for years and still be great. I repair historic cars for a passion. I've a 1935 Ford truck with 7000 miles on it and have converted the oil in it 3 occasions over the final 12 years. 1st time was after a few hundred miles to clean out the meeting lube. 2nd time used to be 3500 miles and that i simply transformed it again final week. The oil used to be still easy.

YOUR ENGINE requires SPECIAL engine oils that meet GM spec numbers printed in your MANUAL and NOT just VISOCITY numbers> Should IMPROPER oil be use and your OIL PRESSURE SENDER clog up or other "THINGS:" happen to your engine, it can cause this. ALSO a dirty IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE can do this, as a DIRTY one will cause your oil to get dirty FASTER< and thicken up enough to perhaps TRIGGER the OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. You are BEST off actually READING your manual about HOW THINGS REALLY WORK! SOMe oil snesors examine the ACIDITY of the oil, but I though that was mostly on HONDA and JAPANESE car engines. GOOD LUCK< but get it RESET by someone that KNOWS how to do this!

The oil life monitor on that car has NO CLUE what the viscosity of the oil was/is, it does not know if you drive in dusty conditions, and can not tell weather or not the oil filter was changed!! The light probably came on because they forgot to reset it the last time you got your oil changed, it is possible that the light can illuminate in less then 4,000 miles but the two factors that mainly effect how many miles before you need your oil changed ( according to the oil life monitor) are 1) engine and ambient air temperature 2) trip length/ warm up time/ how long its run at idle. so if you do not drive in -20 degree weather and the car does not idle excessively, it probably just was not reset last oil change. Do not listen to these other Yahoos who clearly have no clue how an oil life monitor works.

Let's starts with the basics...

The light will come on for a few reasons...

1) Low oil levels...may not have been filled up properly / completely or you could have oil leaks or oil consumption....engine burning oil slowly...

2) Viscosity of the oil oil weak...if cheap oil was used, it can break down prematurely...

3) Partially clogged oil filter (may not have been changed or changed with wrong one

during the last oil change).

4 Weak oil pump...due to age...not really likely!

Here are a few views......Now...Just a point of thought, I change my oil and filter e dry 15,000

miles...periods! I use synthetic oil by Castrol GTX SAE30....not 10W or oil with HD in it...just SAE30...

I have vehicles with 185,000 miles and up...All working perfectly...

I hope this was able to help you....Good Luck....

The computer trips that light based on oil quality, not simply on mileage, so either you drive in very dusty, dirty environments or you are taking the engine to redline alot, both dramatically shorten oil life
