cracked sidewall. Is tire safe?

my wife got a flat. i didn't have time to mess with it so i took it to a tire place. they told me they couldn't find anything wrong. So aired it up put it back on the car. My wife drove it to work the next morning, called said it was flat again. I found a puncture and patched it. trouble is, she drove to work with the tire almost flat. the side wall and has small crack all the way around. no missing rubber chunks, no visible belts, just a hair line crack. the tires will need replaced in spring, and with Christmas here i'd hate to have to buy a new set now. I also don't want to by one new tire then three more in 6 months. will the tire be ok or is it too dangers to risk?

If the tire doesn't have any bumps and doesn't shake when travelling it should be fine.

Many will get sidewall cracks and some will even get bad enough to leak. Rarely have I had a sidewall blow out from weather checking.

Replace it immediately. The sidewall helps support the weight of the car and it's too important an issue to wait.

If the cracks are only surface cracks then you should not worry, if they are deeper than an 1/8th of an inch then you should be concerned. Also put them on the rear of the car in case something should happen for safety' sake. If the tire starts to bounce or vibrate badly you should replace it. It could be starting to separate inside the tire.

If the tire are all the same age,,,look again at the sidewalls!!!



Cold weather makes tires behave differently in flexibility and cornering. Ever notice all the shredded/blown tires along the roadsides?

C'mon, replace the tire now. Do you really want your wife to risk an accident?

It's definitely not worth waiting till spring, so do it now before you regret not having done so.

Very dangerous! could blowout at low, or high speeds. had 1 blowout on me when I stopped for a light, I got lucky. don't take chances unneccessarily!

i would replace it. sooner or later it will split wide open and if the car is driven on the highway when that happens heaven only knows what may happen.
