I am looking at buying a 1998 honda crv that needs a new a/c compressor and drier... I would like to do it myself to save money, but don't want to take on something that's too much... Here's some basic stuff I am able to do on my civic I have now... I've done brake master cylinder, brake calipers, fuel pump, valve cover gasket,, I know these are all pretty basic, so I wanted to know if my skill level is likely high enough to take on the compressor.

let the professionals do it because u have to put in so much oil then vacuum the system down check for leaks and then recharge unless u have an a/c machine you should let your mechanic handle any a/c service

The short answer is ... NO. There are certain specialty tools you have to have to do the job properly. you have to remove the refrigerant form the system, replace the parts that need changed, then pump the system to vacume to remove residual moisture and other airborne contaminants. then you have to charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant... too much- it doesn't cool right, too little the same thing. Your best bet is a reputable shop for at least the refrigerant aspects. I'd recommend them doing the entire job.
