1. Make sure your tires are set to the proper inflation. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%.

2. Tune up your engine. A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency.

3. Don't accelerate too quickly. Accelerating smoothly keeps the engine at lower rpm's thus using less fuel.

4. Don't speed. The faster you move the harder your engine has to work to push through the wind. Speeding can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 33%.

5. Check the condition of your engine air filter. A dirty filter will reduce fuel economy.

6. Replace your fuel filter according to your manufacturers recommended schedule. This will go a long way to enhancing fuel efficiency.

7. Avoid excessive idling. Idling a vehicle wastes a significant amount of fuel. The best way to warm up a vehicle is to drive it slowly until it reaches proper operating temperature.

8. Remove excess weight from the truck and/or back seat. An extra 100 pounds reduces fuel consumption by 1-2%.

9. Use cruise control. In most situations using your cruise control reduces fuel consumption by maintaining a constant speed.

10. Although necessary at times, avoid using the air conditioner all the time as it causes the engine to work hard and consume more fuel.

11.Don't use your car for short distances. When a car engine is cold and doesn't have enough time to heat up,it consumes over 50% more than it does in normal driving

It's very important that the Motorcraft spark plugs be changes every 50,000 miles of operation.

You didn't say which engine your Explorer had.If it's a V-8 you have individual ignition coils just above every spark plug. When the spark plug gaps wear wide from mileage, it causes the coils to run hot and fail. If you have a V-6 the *ignition wires and Motorcraft spark plugs be changed every 50,000 miles.

Read the maximum tire pressure printed on the tires. Jot it down on a piece of paper. Add the manufacturers tire pressure printed on a sticker inside the drivers door. Divide the two added numbers by two and inflate the tires to this pressure. Always inflate and check tire pressure when the tires are stone cold. Tire shops in your area have nitrogen for automotive and truck tires. It's an inert gas without water and dirt. Your tires will only gain one to two pounds of pressure when they're hot.

Your vehicle is supposed to have 5W-20 engine oil in the crankcase. Mobil1 is the best choice. It will help the mileage situation and keep the engine cleaner. Check and change the air and fuel filters if necessary. Drive a reasonable speed with no jack-rabbit starts.

3M Total Fuel System Cleaner and Chevron Techron are far better cleaning products than Seafoam. NAPA has the 3M and Chevron Products.

When ignition wires age and ring up a lot of miles, they build-up electrical resistance and the spark from the coil in the six cylinder motor will jump to ground.

well I actually had a 2002 Explorer 4x4 3 years ago (when gas was insane) and managed to sell it for 10K and got an 07 V6 Mustang for 16K (and it's been a good car) Thing was, the explorer didn't have that kind of mileage on it, and I had 6K saved to put towards the mustang. Now, though the stangs are cheaper, it depends how much you could get for the explorer. (and dealers will always try to lowball you on the trade-in value)

I KBB'ed both cars. Your car's trade in value was around 3,000. The List price of the Mustang was around 12,000. So you could trade in your car, but you would probably have to throw in $8,000.

RE:

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT, V6, with advance trac RSC. It has around 113k miles. I bought it in 2006 with 41k miles. When I had purchased it, it was getting at least 17mpg in the city and 22 on the hwy. I now only get 14mpg city and I was wondering what I can do to improve the gas mileage....

complete tuneup-keep air filters changed(yes I know the computer will compensate for dirty air filter but if you have decreased air flow--eehhh) keep your tires inflated to max pressure-keep front end aligned to prevent scrub-wash your truck and polish it decreases drag-keep your foot out of the accelerator--
