Hi there.

I have 2010 Rav4 4 Cylinder 4WD. Just bought it new 1 month back.
I drive it in City for going back and forth to work.

The city gas mileage that i am getting is 12.1 L/100 KM or 19.2 mpg.

The Official gas mileage for this car is 9.7 L/100 KM or 21 mpg

It looks like something is wrong. What sort of mileage are you getting on your Rav4 (2009 and 2010 models only please). Is there any reason why i am getting much less than the officialy stated mileage?

Thanks

Sounds perfectly within the limits for the type of driving you do. 21mpg is like the Pirate Code - a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. What kind of mileage you get is within your control and requires careful application of the right foot.

Like how bad of gas mileage? Knowing this would have helped a lot. Do you have an orange "check engine" light on on your instrument cluster? If you do, but the car still seems to run ok, then you probably have a bad O2 sensor. Especially if the car has over 100,000 miles on it. Also take a look at what comes out of your tailpipe; if there are any visible blackish emissions, or if you smell gas, this could also point to a bad O2 sensor. Almost any other faulty sensor on the car that triggers the "check engine" light will also cause driveability problems. But not a bad or failed O2 sensor, it will just really eat into your gas mileage, and eventually cause the failure of the vehicle's catalytic converter. Hope this helps, because it's the best guess I have without more information or being able to see the vehicle.

Your not going to get the exact gas mileage it's rated for. The ratings are pretty unrealistic.

That seems close enough that I wouldn't be TOO concerned. Also some vehicles get better gas mileage after the motor breaks itself in.

My ram got BRUTAL gas mileage brand new, and as the motor hit about 5,000KM on it it started to improve.

Some car manufacturers actually program the computer to go easy on the motor until you start breaking it in.

How many miles are on it?

It also depends on how you accelerate in the city from a stop.

You can never 100% go by what a vehicles MPG is rated for. It is entirely dependand on the way you drive.

That is right on target for city driving. That car is much too young to need a catalytic converter or O2 sensor or pretty much anything.
