Question:
Could somebody please explain to me what a "Head Gasket" is??

is this the top half of the engine, called a "Head"?

or is this something different??

If an engine overheats and it warps the "Head", is this referring to the "Head Gasket" needing to be replaced or machined even??

The head gasket is a seal that is designed to be worn out and replaced. It helps maintain oil pressure and heat regulation in your engine. If the head warps, replacing the gasket won't save you. I'm guessing your Toyota has an aluminum head--which means it warps the first time you overheat. Good luck with that.

Head gasket is not the Heads. The gasket fits between the head and the engine block to create a flat seal.

The top "half" of the engine is the head (it is where the valves are).

When an engine overheats, it CAN warp the head but not always. Head gaskets can fail without the car being overheated first. But if the car overheats and the heads are warped, they must be either milled flat or replaced to create that flat seal. Without the seal you would have the coolant leak into the pistons and / or exhaust gas leak into the cooling system.

If your gasket is blown (broken) or the head warped, you will probably see white smoke in you exhaust or lot of gas bubble in your coolant (like it was boiling over). Either way you would know. If you have neither problems then you probably don't have warped heads.

Good Luck.

When you look at a car engine the main two parts that are visible are the engine block and the cylinder heads. The heads are the top of the engine and have the valves and cams in them. The block has the pistons and crank shaft in it.

Normally is the engine has over headed the cylinder head can warp resulting in the gasket that sits between the block and head leaking or blowing. Over time if the heads bolts are not correctly tightened the head gasket can also blow.

Normally when the head gasket is replaced it makes sense to have the head checked out for any warping, if it is then you need to have the head machined flat.

Your cylinder head is separated from the engine block in between is a head gasket that seals in the pressure built up bye the pistons creating compression and the petrol fumes exploding which give you the driving power , overheating is caused because when a head gasket breaks down it allows pressure to escape forcing the water out of the system , when that happens your engine overheats . yes damage usually follows, The manufacturer will make sure that the damage is properly repaired or they will have to do it all over again

the head gasket is the high pressure seal between the block and the head. if the head is warped it may need to be replaced or if the warp is only slight there is a possibility that the head can be skimmed (machined) back to true.replacing the head gasket will not solve a warped head.If the block is aluminium it can also warp unlike a steel block.A recall on the head gasket could be responsible if the gasket has leaked either oil or water resulting in the engine becoming short of lubrication or coolant.this should have been picked up though through your temp. gauge or oil light/sensor on your dash board.

A head gasket is a seal between the engine 'block'(where the pistons are) and the 'head'(where the valves are). The top half of an engine is referred to as the head.

The gasket keeps different elements apart(stops water entering pistons, keeps air and fuel where it should be while engine is working.)

Warping of the head is not referring to the head gasket itself. If the head is warped then it can be machined and the head gasket will need to be replaced.

The gasket will be the cheapest part!

It is there as a seal between the cylinder head block and the cylinder block itself.normally you only get problems on overheating,in which case you may have head distortion and bent valve stems.A diesel engine may also get, what is known as, tracking of the block, which is a channel cut into the metal by the pressure, which is greater in a diesel.there are some engines that don,t have head gaskets, the head and barrel being integral.if the machining is good enough, you can run an engine without a head gasket.

Look into the engine compartment and you will see the part of the engine at the top where the spark plugs or fuel lines to injectors go.

That is the cylinder head.

You will see that where it joins the rest of the engine (engine block) there is a line (the joint).

In this joint between the cylinder head and the block is a seal made from metal and usually asbestos. It is made by sandwiching the asbestos between two layers of metal and has holes in it to the design of the engine's cooling system and oil ports.

It is there to seal the joint because all metal has an uneven surface no matter how smooth it feels and this gasket is designed to take up the unevenness of the metal and enforce a perfect joint that can be removed easily in the event of major engine repair.

Yes-the top half of an engine is referred to as "the head" or "cylinder head".It carries(usually) all the valve gear, exhaust and inlet manifolds, and the fuel supply system-carburretor or fuel injection. If your cylinder head has warped,or distorted, its because the engine has overheated for some reason-lack of coolant,or a problem with the radiator,or even the cooling fan.If you do not attend to this promptly,it will re-occur.As for the head gasket;this is a sheet of material which has copper or cork or some such material in it,and is designed to make a water and gas tight seal between the head and the main cylinder block;as its almost impossible to achieve this by simply machining.

If the cyclinder head is shown to be warped upon removal and checking by special garage equippment, (laser test etc, ) then the head will need "re-skimming", (machining), or replacing. The head gasket is what seals the cylinder head and engine block air tight to promote compression with internal moving parts,(pistons, crankshaft, valves,etc,etc.). If the "head" is warped your only options are as aboved, but either way the head gasket "MUST" be renewed.

A head gasket forms a seal between the head and the block, as to warping the head, once you take the head off, you have to change the head gasket, as when it is put on, it gets compressed and it is a once only item

This is a packing between the engine block and the head.

If due to water leakage the engine overheats the gasket will get burnt. It is unlikely that it will damage your engine head immediately.

Replacing a head gasket is a minor maintenance job.

yes it is,,cylinder head is the top of the engine,,head gasket or cylinder head gasket is the one responsible for sealing in between the engine block and cylinder head,, it is commonly an organic material or aluminum or bronze,, its purpose is to seal tight combustion chambers, oil and water passages in between block and cylinder heads.

once damaged it needed be replaced, reusing is not advisable since it will impair sealing ability.

when your cylinder head is warped, meaning the flat surface is not straight anymore,, cylinder head gasket will not work good.. have the head machined flat before putting back otherwise more serious problems might happen.

thanks

The head gasket is sadnwiched between the bottom half of the engine block between the heads (top half) valve train.

There no longer called "magical underpants" they're called Temple under clothing. It helps as a reminder for chastity that's an excellent cocept regardless of religious ideals. God bless the Mormons for going against what's generic and what's nice.Chastity and virginity could be practiced extra interior our society. The Amercican pop subculture of in the present day is twisted and perverted.
