Question:
Piggy-back oil drain plug?

I have a piggy-back oil drain plug in my 2002 Chevy Caviler. I recently had my oil changed and when the people put the plug back in, it began to leak and would not tighten. I think the guy unscrewed the larger plug instead of the smaller plug. (I tried to tighten it when I got home and would not get tight) I really don't have the finances to replace my oil pan. Is there anything I can do?

These cut rate places that change oil have a list of peoples cars they have over torqued the drain plugs on as thick as a NY city phone book, file a claim, they wont even bother going to small claims court, as they know the judge will rule against them, they will fix your car and cut there losses, should have took it back the day you noticed it leaking and gave the manager a rash of S#!T,

most likely would have fixed right then and there,

yes when you train chimps and pay peanuts you still get monkeys

There is an easy fix to this. Go to your local parts store and ask for a self tapping oil plug. Take out the piggyback setup and carefully put the new one in. It may go in tight but that is because it is cutting new threads. they work just like a regular plug, meaning they can be easily removed and installed it regular oil change intervals. I had one in a cavalier for years and it worked great. You may need to take the old plug with you to get the right size as the new one is slightly oversized.

undo the plug... drain the oil.. leave over night to get as much oil out as possible..

buy some two part epoxy resin.. ( Araldite in Australia.. not sure what its called in the USA)

clean the threads of oil.. wipe down with methylated spirits. mix up some epoxy.. place on the threads of the plug & tighten up.. then fill the car with oil & drive it for an hour or so..

two part epoxy is a thermo setting glue... so buy running the car & getting it hot ,, it dries at the temperature it needs to have maximum strength at...

This is bad. The best thing to do is to go back to were it was done and have them pull the leaking plug off and see if it is stripped as well as the hole it goes in, TELL them you want look as well you will see if it is. If so because they were the lasy people to work on it they should repair it. It is a simple fix with what is called a heli coil. either way GO BACK NOW and have them look at it.

1. yes... its at NAPA parts store. its over sized. and will tap a new threads . it. was over tightened.. you should have called asap!! only use a repeatable place of business. Y. you say. the Manager will A. have you or him to have a tow truck bring it back.. if the leak is bad..one. now a drip. you take it right strait back..don't EVER.. try to fix your self. you might foot the bill not them.. it would be like you did it not them. OR due to you ase mechanic. it only takes X. amount of foot pounds of TORK. ? RIGHT. lol. no. if not caught in time. big money... motor damage. crank shaft.cam. liftors.and so on...

hope this will help.

buy a large stud extractor that fits the recess it screws backwards so as you unscrew with a wrench it grips tighter, ignore the brainless advice about welding a nut onto the plug you can't weld onto a full oil pan
