If you are careful to reinstall the new tie rod end to the exact same location, do you really need an alignment? Are there any tests you can do on your own to see if it is still aligned properly?

Yes,you do need to have it checked.Even if you were careful the front end may have been slightly out to begin with.

You should always get an alignment anytime you do any kinda suspension work, cause the new parts might be slightly different, and cause it to be out of kilter no matter what you do to try to get the parts in the exact same location,

anytime you change a front end part you need to get an alignment, when you change a tie rod your toe in will be off a little if nothing else.

There is no way that you can get the rods exactly right,or do any test yourself as you dont have the equipment.Drive carefully to a fully equipped shop and for about $50 they will do it and check your installation.
