just bought a 78 camaro type-LT with the 305, it is smoking really bad and spiting lots of oil out on the drivers side. the oil seems to be coming from around the valve cover or pcv valve, also there is a aftermarket oil pressure Gage installed on the back of the intake manifold that has oil pooling on it to. Im guna go start on the valve cover gaskets and throw on a new pcv valve but if anyone has any better ideas let me know.

... oh yeah it has lots of other problems so i will probably be posting questions on here often for the next few weeks.

Since the valve cover is the cause of the problem maybe you could also take a look at the plugs and wires....might want to hit them with some break cleaner to clean all the crap off. I would also look into fuel filters and the lil things that can effect idle and accel. Maybe clean the carbs too and put some fuel additive in to clean her out. Good luck with the new car....nice year!

Your Camaro is a great body style so making it reliable is worthwhile. Having said that, the small block chevy can be a symphony of leaks. Valve covers are a common place but more common are valve stem leaks.

When the valve stems loosen up, oil dripps down onto the spark plug which makes it smoke. Oil pan, rear-main-seal, timing chain cover. and that poorly mounted oil pressure gauge sender are also common. Eventually a good rebuilt engine will correct all those problems and you might upgrade to a 350. Its not much more $ and alot stronger.

"New" ?????

If the smoke is coming out of the tail pipe, and it is blue, you are going to have to put some serious effort into the engine - at 30 years old, it most likely needs the whole nine yards ... to wit, a complete rebuild. Now if the chassis is in fair to good condition it will certainly be worth it, and after tightening up the valve cover gaskets, your next step is to start calling around your local automotive recycling centers to locate a serviceable 350 core engine for your project .... That, a Chilton's manual and a pile of tools will get you started.
