Question:
Penny in cigarette lighter?
2011-02-15 06:01:18 UTC
There are two pennies stuck in the cigarette lighter in my car. There are huge sparks shooting out as I type. I have tried the pencil with chewing gum trick, but the gum just isn't strong enough. I don't know anything about fuses, so suggesting that I remove the fuse is useless. I need to use the car asap, so what I want to know is, if I put super glue on the end of the eraser on the pencil, and hold it on the pennies until it dries and I can pull them out, will this be dangerous to me? The sparks are big and scary, lol, and I want to be sure this can be done without electrocuting myself. I don't have anyone else that can do this for me right now--

you need to go under the dash and disconnect the lighter, the sparks are a indication things are not well a fuse is supposed to blow, those pennines are probably stuck in there too good, buy a new lighter is my best suggestion, or disconnect the thing from the back, and then try to get the pennies out (its not worth the hassle ) if the fuse does not blow, it is going to get hot and thats not good

Finding and removing the fuse isn't that hard. Look in your owners manual in index in the back for "fuse" and it will lead you to a page with a diagram to find the box and the right fuse.

OR

Remove the ground (black) wire from the car battery. You can normally do this with just a wrench. Since it is the ground, should you accidentally connect it with the car frame there will be no sparks.

After the ground is removed from the battery, then the sparks on the cigarette lighter should go away. Then you can try to use a thin flat blade screwdriver to pry them out.

OR

Perhaps use a drill and small drill bit to drill into the penny, then gently pull it out with the drill bit at an angle.

I doubt the superglue on a pencil will stick. It will more likely run and glue the penny to the lighter.

The sparks are harmless, it's a 12 volt system. By the time you read this the fuse will more then likely have blown. Once the fuse blows you can dig the pennies out with a small screwdriver. Nice place to keep a few cents hey?

the fuse should have blown the instant they made contact and sparked.... how about using a vacuum cleaner hose to get them out ?
