It sounds like you have a bad ground to your tail lights. The brake lights are back feeding through the tail light and dash light circuit to find a ground also the left tail light socket may need replaced. Check to make sure the black wire at both tail lights is grounded If I remember right the ground wire is bolted to the frame 1 wire for both lights and I think it's on the left side near the back bumper but I'm not sure it's been a few years since I have fixed that problem on an S-10 from the 80's

appears like they mixed up the wires from the rear parking lights furniture with the brake lights furniture such that they used the nice and cozy line of the parking gentle because of the fact the earth for the brake gentle. whilst the headlights are off and subsequently the parking lights furniture are off, the park lights furniture warm line acts as a floor and the brake gentle purposes usually with the exception that the park lights furniture will gentle with the brake lights furniture yet whilst the headlights are on and subsequently the park lights furniture are on, the brake lights furniture has no earth to end a circuit with because of the fact it fairly is earth line would then be at +12V too. whilst no longer braking the nice and cozy line to the brake gentle isn't linked so it fairly is not suitable what it fairly is earth line is at, no modern-day will bypass. you may examine this with a voltmeter, turn on the park lights furniture and if the two finally ends up interior the brake lights furniture are at 12V with appreciate to the chassis then it fairly is what has happened. The 0.33 gentle on the suited of the hatch is nowheres close to a parking gentle subsequently they won't confuse the earth line. notice the earth line would not could bypass all the formerly to the dashboard or brake pedal, it in basic terms has to bypass to the closest touch factor with the chassis. human beings often think of of earth lines as being interchangeable so they only seem for a line with 0 voltage with appreciate to the chassis, regrettably, the nice and cozy line for the parking line would even have 0 voltage whilst off.
