Oil leak question.. HELP PLEASE!!!!?

im planning to buy a 1990 carrera 2 and i got an inspection on it and it said it has

trans fluid leak at reverse light switch

and

engine oil leaks at
both lower valve cover gaskets
both sides timing chain housings

what does that all mean? are those big things to fix?

as long as its not pouring out i think youll be fine. keep track of the oil check it at least once a week.

except for the timing chain housing the leaks arn't serious. But the oil leak at the housings is almost certainly leaking camshaft oil seals. Whatever it needs to be checked. When was the timing belt replaced? A good mechanic will always check the cam seals and change them if needed when the belt is replaced. The crank seal could be leaking too. This is all behind the housings. So.... you want a new timing belt if you are removing the housings and some oil seals. Many people get a new water pump when the belt is changed too. So you see you are getting into some money. I'm not familiar with this car. But its pretty old. And may even require high octane gas. It is a performance car. So check the owners manual to see if it does.

The trans fluid leak is not that bad, but the oil leaks are very bad because you don't know how long it's been leaking or how hot the engine has gotten, a over heated engine takes a great toll on the life of the engine, I would not buy this car seems like a lot of problems to start with, but if you do fix all the oil leaks first. Also have the compression checked.

not big problems but because it's a Carrera expensive. the trans sensor leak is the easiest and probably cheapest. its simply a threaded in sensor that need tighten or replaced and the fluid re topped in the trans.

valve cover gaskets depending on access are simple to change but if it has a lot of crap covering them time consuming a bit and make sure the gaskets are replaced not just tighten again. some people do this and it may work for a while but not that long.

timing chain housings will require some effort most likely as accessories must be removed or pulled out of the way.

I am wondering if all of this is a system of too much blow by pressure locked in the crankcase.

i would leave it. you don't know how long the leaks have been there and what damage has been caused by the potential of increased wear from the leaks. the carrera 2 is not a cheap car that costs pennies to repair, and you will pay a premium for parts.it is not common for them to leak from the timing housings,and i would be very concerned as to the cause of the leak.it could be that the seal has gone around the pulley, in which case it is engine out....big bucks dude....anything to do with these motors is gonna cost you. do you really want to risk your money. better to spend a bit more on a sound motor with no problems.

Do not buy a car which has a potential to be a pain. Although a slight leak of the oil is a quick fix if you just replace the seals, however there might more than it appears. Don't bother with it and go buy a cleaner one.

With two hundred thousand miles on your car, the rings (piston rings) have slowly worn down to the point where oil gets past them and into the cylinders. So the oil is being burned in the cylinders. You can change the rings yourself but it's really, really complicated and you'd need a garage so your car can be there for a few days, while you do it.

It means MONEY. MONEY for the car repair shop. They are not such that big things to repair. They are DIFFICULT to do for space reasons. Nothing is impossible!!

motor leaks oil. be suspicious, expect it to have been run too low and driven too fast/far on low oil==bad motor/gearbox u figure it out.

You should have asked the mechanic that did the inspection how much he would have charged for the repairs....
